DinerPass Smartphone Application

This is not a food review.

What I am about to share with you today is something I'd like to call Foursquare 2.0.

We usually have to put that little effort at each meal to catch a waiter's attention. Taking our orders, chasing them and to also request for bills. Some people would leave comments on paper in the comment box but who really has time for that right? What people would normally do is file a verbal complaint to the manager/supervisor, leave the restaurant and never come back again (maybe). Perhaps write an aggressive tip on their Foursquare page. But how would we know if our complaints have been taken into consideration by the restaurant owners as a form of improvement or not? We don't. And we won't.

Today, I for lunch with my university mates at this restaurant located at First Subang Mall called Coffee Chemistry. As I sat down, the advertisement on the table immediately caught my attention because there, displayed so clearly, was one good-looking brownie and we could get it for free! However, it's sad to say that nothing really comes for free in life...

The advertisement displayed a smartphone app called DinerPass. I believe this will come in handy for many people because it did for me. I would personally call this an e-Dining system and convenience is their middle name.

How does it work?

You will see this as you open the app.
You will have to sign up or log in via Facebook before coming to this page. Don't worry because all they need is your name (not necessarily full name) and email.
Go to "Restaurants" to see where is this application applicable.
Go to "Check-In" and you will come to this page as seen in the image shown below.

Use this to scan the QR code shown on the advertisement on your table.
Once you've checked-in, go to "Menu" and you can see all the orders available at the time of your visit.
Go to "Order" to select your orders and then you can send it straight to the kitchen.
I have only used the "Service" function to ask for my bill and the waiter in charge got my request immediately. You can also signal the waiter under that tab if you have any other requests without having to raise your hand and what not.

The name of the restaurant I went to. Remember when I said this is Foursquare 2.0? Do you see why now? (:
And because it was my first time registering and using this application, I got this for free:

Brownie and ice-cream on a beautifully decorated plate!

Shakespeare Boulangerie & Pâtisserie @ SS15, Subang Jaya [Brief Review]

This place opened only last Monday at a corner in SS15, Subang Jaya where Salmon Steak and the recently relocated Inter-Cultural Language School are situated.

The view outside.

I first laid my eyes on it a few days ago and somehow had a good hunch. I shouldn't have ignored myself.

I went over with my family after dinner tonight and scanned the bakery. I then noticed something.

Do you see it? Perhaps you don't.

I asked the friendly supervisor/manager whether or not they are affiliated with Levain Boulangerie & Pâtisserie (reviewed here). And guess what? THEY ARE. This particular branch is the sister of Levain! What a discovery! I have more pieces of evidence:

Their menu!
It is just about the same! I see my RM6.50 mushroom soup along with the aglio-oilo and creamy mushroom spaghetti which I had at Levain the other day.

And...

Déjà vu? (:

Initially, this was where I was supposed to grab dinner but as I searched online, their Facebook page had barely twenty likes (as of 8.00 p.m.) and no one, not a soul wrote a review of this.

Until the 28th February to celebrate their opening, they have a 20% introductory discount.

I hope to try out the dishes at this place soon. Hopefully the mushroom soup is as good as Levain's (or better) so I need not travel to another state just for good mushroom soup again.

Anyway, these are some information from the flyer I took.

Ah Lye Curry Fish Head Restaurant @ SS19, Subang Jaya

Tonight I decided to write a simple review of this Chinese restaurant my family and I had dinner at. I am personally very fond of Chinese food - especially mom's cooking. From egg fu yong to stir-fried vegetables, bean curd and steamed fish with soy sauce, I cannot imagine my life without those dishes. Guess my roots are shown quite clearly in my food preference.

As you can tell from the title, the restaurant's speciality is curry fish head. I never knew the existence of this place until dad looked it up on the internet. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. And by nowhere I mean rows and rows of houses and suddenly *poof!* Behold, a row of shops!

* Note: I apologize for the low quality photos from my phone because I did not expect myself to write a review about this place and therefore did not bring my camera. You'll see why I ended up writing one anyway somewhere at the part where I introduce the dishes (:

Setting

An article stated that this restaurant has been around since the year 2000. When you visit the restaurant, you can tell that the sign board is really old and is not well lit at night.

The restaurant's sign board barely visible.

One of the waitresses serving rice. The counter behind her is where they make drinks and cook rice. The kitchen is pretty much hidden way at the back.

The restaurant is air conditioned. Design wise, it's typically a modern Chinese restaurant in a suburban area. It is not decorated with many (or any) pieces of art and the tables are placed fairly closely to each other. I was a little annoyed at a lady who was sitting at the table behind me because her chair kept hitting mine and she did not turn to apologize at all. Because I wanted to enjoy my dinner and my table had some space, I had to relocate my seating position.

It wasn't a full house during my visit but there were many big families of six members and above.

What went into our tummies

The following dishes we ordered are eaten with rice. Typical Chinese way of eating - except that we did not use chopsticks.

Mmmmm...
I don't know about most people but I really love to add garlic and soy sauce to my rice before eating it. Garlic is like the ultimate flavour enhancer to me!

Hot sea coconut
This is a home made drink. You can tell from the taste of the filtered water and the sweetness of the drink. Aside from that, other drinks they had tonight was honey ginger and also a lime drink.

Bean curd [RM6.00]
This is served with something I believe is pickled white radish (please correct me if I'm wrong) along with spring onions and fried onions. It's a salty dish and the flavour of the sauce compliments the bean curd.

Asam Prawn [RM20.00]
Real pricey for a small dish of four prawns but they are not miserable prawns. They are HUGE. The asam sauce is also pretty good. It's quite sweetish. I wouldn't order this dish on my next visit. Once is enough.

Sweet Pork [RM14.00]
I think this dish is okay. The pieces of pork are quite tender. I do think there's something missing in this dish to make it more syok (erm, I'm not entirely sure how to explain this Malaysian term to foreigners but I can give you an idea. Syok represents the fireworks in the night sky full of stars. If that made any sense at all ...)

Stir-fry Bean sprouts [RM6.00]
A simple, average dish. You can't go very wrong with stir-fry bean sprouts unless you're not a good cook.

And here's the highlight of the dinner:

Their speciality: Curry Fish Head [RM27.00]
This is the reason why I decided to write a review. I think this dish is close to amazing. The curry is thick and full of flavour from the spices they used. The fish is fresh, although they weren't super generous with its amount, and so are the aubergines, okras and tofu. While eating it with rice, it suddenly reminded me of the Nyonya style of cooking curry for some reason. The fairly spiciness of the curry enhanced the flavour of the dish as a whole.

Some regulars would say that this dish went down standard since a few years ago but as a newbie, I still think it's fine.

This is how thick it is!

A couple of tips

If you are new to the Chinese restaurant style of ordering and paying, there will be the manager/supervisor who would either seat you and/or come to your table the minute you are seated to take your order. Places like this do not have a printed menu. Tell them what you want and they will suggest the cooking style of your dish to its availability. i.e. Chicken with Marmite sauce, fish and ginger sauce, stir-fry french beans, etc. When finished, they will bring the bill to your table. Some restaurants do not give you receipts like this one.

This applies to most Chinese restaurants: Come early! Peak hours can start as early as 6.00 p.m. for popular restaurants. Alternatively, you can give them a call to make a reservation on weekends though I think it's not really necessary.

Parking is not an issue for this place. It can be really dark and dodgy at night so bring along some company.

Finding your way there

If you're not familiar with the SS19 housing area, it's going to be a little tough for you to look for this place. I would recommend mapping your way before coming. The restaurant is located along a row of shops where Subang Jaya Gospel Centre and Pasaraya Ria are too. And pray on your way out.

[CLOSED] Crayon Burger @ SS15, Subang Jaya

Many say that this place is comparable to myBurgerLab which is the main reason why I wanted to head there and be the judge myself.

The weather was pretty hot today and I was in need of a good lunch with a cold drink so Crayon Burger was the first thing which popped up in my mind. Generally, I can tell you that the uniqueness of the ingredients and design of the burgers (including their wacky names like Zombie Burger and Hashtag) were somethings that struck an impression the minute I was at the counter.

Setting

According to one of the wall posts on their Facebook page, Crayon Burger was founded by a Taylor's University architecture student. It opened in January 2013 last month and is located in SS15, one of the most congested areas in Subang Jaya whether day or night. They operate from 11.00 a.m. - 10.00 p.m. from Tuesdays to Sundays which I think is good because most burger places are only open at 5.00 p.m. Some people eat burgers for lunch too, you know. They are known for the coloured burger buns (listed in menu below).

The side table and drawings on the walls.
The entire restaurant is white in colour (except for the walls of the soda dispenser area next to the counter) and is not flooded with chairs and tables. It gave me the feeling of spaciousness as I entered and on a personal note, spacious is considered an important element of comfort.

I love this rainbow!

You have to agree that this is cute.

The counter and work place.
I think that restaurants with openly displayed kitchens are probably very clean. While placing my order, I had a good look of the kitchen. The system looked organized but because there were only three people at work, I wasn't expecting too much because there were easily ten people at the tables and not all of them have been served yet. Yes, this is my level of understanding and patience. After all, I had good company with me. However, I believe that we all are aware that waiting for food orders is not entirely pleasant.

Their chalkboard menu!
Oh, they play mainstream, pumping-up music. Note that I used the word "play" and not "blast" (:

My Company

I went there for lunch with my university mates, Lestari and Hanny, earlier this sunny afternoon. Thank you, girls, for contributing your tummies! :D
Lestari (:

Hanny (:
Click here to visit Hanny's blog!

What went into our tummies

We ordered four burgers in total (three sets and one à la carte) which are the following:

Lestari's order: Zombie Burger [RM14.00 + RM5 add-on fries and bottomless soda]
This is a grey coloured poppy seed bun (not charcoal bun) with a beef patty and Swiss cheese. The colour of the bun is the reason behind the name "zombie". I think if it were to have dripping tomato sauce, it would have had a better resemblance to its name.

Hanny's order: Hashtag with red bun [RM15.00 + RM5.00 add-on fries and bottomless soda]
I think most of us can agree that a hash brown in a burger is the ultimate plus point. This particular burger has jalapeño cheese cream in it.

Their famous Peanut Butter Bacon with red bun [RM15.00 + RM5.00 add-on fries and bottomless soda]
To the person who invented this baby, you are amazing. This burger has raspberry jam and bacon which compliment each other nicely. The bacon is sweet because it is placed right under the jam (which I initially mistook for caramelized bacon) and was not too tough. The amount of peanut butter is just right and did not overpower the flavour of the beef patty and cheese. Excellently done!

On a general note for these three burgers, the girls and I love the way the cheese is done. There is a layer melted over the patty and also a crispy cheese piece which gave the burger a good crunchy taste. We also like the way the patties are cooked. You can definitely tell that they are not processed patties because of their juiciness and are flavoured nicely with salt and pepper.

I am personally satisfied with the fries because ours were fresh although I wish they would serve the fries with potato skin on it to add crispiness and flavour.

We then decided to order one more burger:

The Boss with vege bun [RM16.00]
Even if you dislike wasabi because of its burning sensation in your mouth after consumption, please do not immediately eliminate this beauty from your list of options. The menu clearly stated that it has MILD wasabi mayo and take their word for it. I'm not usually into wasabi but I decided to give it a try anyway. There is only a teeny tiny hint of wasabi and my mouth did not burn into flames (thankfully). The egg is fried to perfection but I do wish that they would put a bigger onion ring or perhaps more. I should add that the reason why the burger came in pieces was because we girls were sharing it so I asked the cook to cut it into four. It took two people and two minutes to complete the cutting process because they did not want to ruin the burger.

A couple of tips

For those who do not know, SS15 is flooded with students on weekdays. You do NOT want to come for lunch on a weekday unless you're daring enough to double park/not pay your parking fee or if you do not mind the crowd of students at lunch hour. There are ample parking lots on Saturdays and Sundays on that particular street. Plus, there are no parking charges on weekends so don't you worry child (:

Do not dispose of your receipts because your order number is printed on it. Be aware of the order numbers displayed in red digits by the counter.

A student discount of 10% is available upon presenting your student ID card when placing your order.

For "safety precautions", I tweeted Crayon Burger before coming over because I did not want to be disappointed again like the last time I decided to pay them a visit. If you have any questions, tweet them. They usually reply promptly.

As for its comparison to myBurgerLab, I'll only say this: to each its own! This place is so unique by itself. Besides, you can't run out of place that easily when it comes to burgers because there must be a bun, a patty in between and everything else is up to you.

Finding your way there

I think the best landmark would be the massive, multi-storied, newly renovated SS15 market (with orange coloured roofs). The restaurant is located behind that particular market and along the same row as Canai. If you are coming from the Maybank entrance, follow the road and make sure you go pass K3K Benta. Canai is at the next turning upfront.

Levain Boulangerie & Pâtisserie @ Kuala Lumpur

Finally, I thought. This place has been on my to-visit list on Foursquare for so many months it can collect virtual dust.

I was somehow either really lucky (or unlucky) that Crayon Burger, the place I was supposed to grab lunch at, was closed until 4 p.m. earlier today for maintenance. I was really looking forward to trying the burgers to see why that place has been the talk of the town aside from the fact that their burgers are known for their unique variety of colours.

After passing by, the one-way road gave us a little time to think about the next possible place to head to for lunch without going through any massive jams. I thought of my watch list (refer to the sidebar) and realized I have missions to fulfil. I knew that my friend Sam, who was my company for lunch today, really loves the mushroom soup at Levain. He was the one who recommended me to try it out so we decided to go there instead.

Setting

Levain's valet parking area was full of cars at 2 p.m. and there was no sign of any empty lots. Not wanting to give up hope, we went three rounds but ended up parking at another parking area just nearby Coco Tei. That parking fee costs RM5 per entry.

The entrance.

The garden design of the entrance was really welcoming. It wasn't a full house when we stepped inside despite the full car park. I personally like the decorations and the lighting in the bakery. Also, as you enter, you can see complimentary hot and cold water on the right side - which means if you ordered hot tea and wish to get a refill, you have to do it by yourself.

As a whole, the entire bakery has a really beautiful French touch to it.

Proudly displaying their pastries and cakes. This bakery is known for their stone oven baking method.

The view from where I was sitting at. This little area is noisy when full because it's enclosed. Sitting outside by the patio is more ideal for a quieter meal time.

Their menu! The stuffs here are generally reasonably priced for a bakery in Kuala Lumpur.

Service

I must comment on this. There are a few pros and cons to it but after summing them up, I have a neutral impression towards their service.

Pros

As we entered, we were greeted with "Welcome to Levain!" which put a smile on my face. The moment we sat down after ordering, Sam's mushroom soup came in less than a minute! My main dish came within the next minute after! I kid you not, dear readers. I have never experienced such a prompt serving time in my life. It was as if they knew I was coming and my entire dish was prepared beforehand then heated up before serving.

But, no. It was really done from scratch. The other dishes came in no time at all.

On the contrary ...

Cons

The reason why I chose Levain was because I wanted to see what's the fuss about their mushroom soup since there are heaps of comments talking about how amazing it is on Foursquare and also the many times Sam has told me about it before.

So I did, I ordered it. Or at least I thought I did. I only noticed an unfamiliar food in my receipt after the food arrived. Guess what he keyed in instead?

Mushroom Cream Pasta

I was not happy at first. And I was about to correct them but because it is said on fine print that I ordered Mushroom Cream Pasta, I had no other legitimate piece of evidence to back up my case. Regardless, I thought it was a blessing in disguise because my idea as a newbie food blogger is, after all, to try as many things my tummy can hold as possible. Plus, they both have mushrooms and are both creamy.

Aside from that little miscommunication, some of the workers do not speak fluent English and they are less friendly. They are, however, still fairly attentive.

What went into our tummies

Their famous creamy mushroom chicken soup [RM6.50]
Sam got his mushroom soup and I managed to steal a spoonful of it. The texture of the soup is so thick and creamy it felt as if I was drinking salted cream. I couldn't really taste much of the mushroom nor chicken flavour. I still liked it, though.

My main dish: Seafood Aglio Olio [RM12.90]
The amount of ingredients on this plate is spectacular. They have pieces of fish, calamari rings, baby tomatoes, two prawns and diced red, yellow and green pepper. The dish is nicely seasoned and the amount of olive oil is just nice. The pasta did not look too dry nor did it seem like it is crying for help drowning in oil. I was told that this is one of their best sellers along with the Chicken Meatball Bolognaise for the "Spaghetti" category of the menu.

Mushroom Cream Pasta [RM10.30]
This is not the best I've had. Despite the texture of the cream and mushrooms being cooked well, the sauce is not tasty. It is nearly quite bland unless with the help of some salt and a good dash of pepper. I also did not particularly like the chilli by the side. It has lime in it and I thought it does not go well with the dish. Alternatively, if this dish had more cheese on it, it would be just right.

Beef Stew [RM25.00]
Taste wise, I approve. You can see that they are generous with their meat for this dish. The gravy is rich in flavour but I think it's a wee bit too thick. This is just a personal preference but I also would've preferred the baguette toasted a little to add colour and to also give it that crunch when I dig into it. Other than that, I think this dish is a little towards the expensive side of the scale as compared to the other dishes on the menu.

I also had English breakfast tea to accompany my meal and this is the brand that they use.
We did not order the cakes because we were so full and that they are fairly pricey. A small slice can cost you RM8.00+.

Also, these were to go so we wouldn't feel so bad leaving the place without having dessert:

(Clockwise from top left) Choco Crunch [RM3.20], White Crunch [RM3.20] and Custard Cream Donut [RM2.80]
I had to eat mine at home because I was way too full to have them dined in.

Choco Crunch: Plain chocolate, charcoal-looking bun with no cream inside.

Custard Cream Donut: The custard is beautiful!

A couple of tips

Do not place your order the minute you enter. Get the red "OCCUPIED" sign from the counter and look for a table. Put the sign on your desired table and remember your table number before heading to the counter to place your order. They will not entertain you if you do not have a table number.

If you do not mind the warmth, park yourself outside for a quieter environment and to enjoy the greenery with a good cup of tea maybe.

And also, the mini croissants disappear fast according to Sam.

Finding your way there

I'm not an expert with roads in Kuala Lumpur but I can tell you if you see the Kuwait Embassy, you are close by. Turn into Jalan Delima before Renoma Café which is siutuated along Jalan Bukit Bintang. Avoid parking by the roadsides unless you wish to get a ticket.
