Candela GentleYAG Laser for Permanent Hair Removal @ Premier Clinic, TTDI

Disclaimer: Sponsored treatment. Reviews are entirely my own. Pictures unedited.

Hey everyone! Yes, this is something considered to be out of the ordinary appearing on my blog.

Have you ever felt insecure because of your underarms? I have myself. Not that it bothers me all the time because I'm well aware not all of us can afford to have hairless underarms with even skin tones. It only bothers me when that noticeable forest of hair and skin area a few tones darker than the rest of your arms become the highlight of your photos (self-confidence -10).

It took me a while to get this post up for obvious reasons. If flashing your underarms in photos are bad enough, what more to display them on your public blog. But it's up now! And here's to all of you who are insecure about your underarms :)

30th September: I visited Premier Clinic in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) to undergo a laser treatment to remove my underarm hair. Prior to the visit, I did my research on what this medical aesthetic clinic has to offer through their website and consulted family and a few friends. Honestly, it was more comforting to know people within your circle who have already experienced it (thanks Carmen!).

So that's me.

View of the clinic.

One of the nurses insisted I took a picture here. She's pretty good with portraits!

During consultation with Dr Kee.

Initially, I was deciding between getting rid of my underarm hair or unwanted fat cells (I could only choose one). I was not too keen on doing botox nor fillers. Dr Kee Yong Seng was my doctor that day. He explained the procedures and possible side effects of the treatments quite thoroughly. The moment he noted the Vanquish Fat Removal treatment doesn't help you lose weight but simply involves the destroying of unwanted fat cells, I decided to just go with the Candela GentleYAG Laser treatment.

About the treatment:
"The GentleYAG system utilises a high-energy laser that does not affect or harm your skin. A cooling device will be used first to spray your skin so as to ensure you are comfortable during the hair removal procedure. As the target is set, a gentle beam of light is emitted by the GentleYAG system. The long-pulse laser will pass through your skin without causing any damage whatsoever, and will be absorbed by the target area. Laser energy will be converted to heat which helps to permanently destroying the hair follicle in the process and greatly reducing any hair regrowth. There is no downtime with the Candela GentleYAG laser, making this the laser of choice for your permanent hair removal.

It does not matter how fair or dark a patient’s skin is as the GentleYAG laser system will remove hair regardless. This eliminates the need for waxing, shaving or plucking on the patient’s part and they will no longer have to go through this cycle. Less painful than electrolysis, the procedure is fairly swift and a lot less tedious than other hair removal techniques. Skin and delicate pores are not harmed during the treatment and even larger body areas such as the back, arms, legs and shoulders can treated and left hair-free in a single session."

TL;DR: Your hair growth will lessen, it's not painful, you can raise your arms in peace, and for the more paranoid people, you obviously don't die (lol).

Undergoing the treatment (p.s. that pipe-looking item isn't in my mouth)
As assured, both a female and male were present in the room for my comfort and to ensure my privacy is not violated.

So that one session took barely 5 minutes. Dr Kee informed me of the two types of sounds I will hear during the process: the sound of a vacuum and the laser. The entire thing was a painless encounter - as if someone was shooting a piece of rubber band onto your skin. After the session, you will feel a bit of discomfort and very slight burns. The nurse then put a cream called Fucicort on the area to treat it.

The image taken before the session began.

Immediately after the session. As you would've noticed, there is not much of a difference. I left the clinic slightly disappointed thinking this is all I was going to get. It turns out I was wrong.

* * * *

About a week after the treatment, I noticed the hairs falling off easily. I even held a few of them between my fingers and they just came off easily. A bit scary, right? But that's what we want to see anyway.

18th October: Two weeks and four days after. The image below was taken just hours before I drafted this post today.

Definitely lesser hair growth and I'm quite happy with the outcome although my skin is still rough and is of a darker tone compared to the rest of my arm. For my underarms to still look this clean without doing anything other than bathing it, I'm amazed at the outcome.

I'm expecting the hair to grow out again sooner or later. Then again, for best results, you need to undergo 6 sessions.

In all honesty, knowing that such treatments can cost several holes in your wallet, I've looked up some alternatives for hairless underarms with an even skin tone. I found a YouTube video saying you should use tweezers to pluck off the hairs and rub a lemon dipped in sugar and honey to exfoliate the skin to brighten up the area. Not sure if it works, but if you've tried these methods, let me know how it worked out (or did not work out) for you.

End of review. Thank you, Premier Clinic, for the treatment and your services!

  1. Really brave of you to post this! I'm also hyper-conscious of my underarms, so I think it's amazing that you went and got laser done! I know some are more "well if you don't like my mini-forest then sucks to be you", but if that's what you want and you feel better because of it then kudos to you! Go get what you want, girl!

The performance and preparations of femininity shouldn't be hidden to protect some kind of 'mystique' or whatever. Thank you for the review! Anyway! Coffee soon? xoxo, Esther Ho

    1. Aww thank you so much, Esther! I'm thankful that this offer came by and that I had the opportunity to undergo the treatment. It's not something everyone gets and I'm grateful for it (: And yes, I agree. Most girls are afraid of being judged for going through such small treatments to make themselves look better in their own terms. After posting this up, I honestly feel there's really nothing to be ashamed of. You have underarms, I have underarms. Yours may look different from mine, but well, we're all different anyway so no big deal (:

Coffee sounds great especially when exams are coming up. Could use a cuppa as well as your great company!
